Montessori and the Updated Ontario Kindergarten Curriculum
The Ontario Kindergarten curriculum was recently updated (2026) aiming to incorporate more academic rigor, with greater focus on early literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving. While these changes aim to strengthen academic foundations, they raise important questions for parents: Do schools have the proper training for staff? Are the right tools and materials in place to support meaningful learning?
At Manor Montessori, these challenges are addressed naturally. All our programs combine Montessori-trained teachers, a proven method, and carefully designed materials to ensure children develop strong literacy, numeracy, and logical thinking skills. Children work with materials like: Sandpaper Letters, the Moveable Alphabet, Number Rods, Golden Beads, and sensorial materials and many more to build understanding, confidence, and independence — all within purposeful, hands-on learning experiences.
The 2026 curriculum changes highlight the importance of the early development of foundational reading, writing and math skills — exactly what Montessori has offered for over a century. With trained guides and a prepared environment, Montessori doesn’t just introduce academic concepts; it ensures children truly master them while nurturing focus, curiosity, and a love of learning.
In short, while the updated curriculum increases expectations, Montessori provides the expertise, method, and materials to deliver those skills effectively and meaningfully.
